LOCAL NOTES

Installing solar in Belgo

Belgo sits on Kelowna’s east side, around Belgo Road and Belgo Elementary, between Rutland and the hills to the east. It mixes older family homes with small acreages and a few hobby farms. Lots tend to be bigger than in central Rutland, and many have a shop or barn.

Many Belgo homes date from the 1970s and 1980s, so we check two things before anything else: how much life the roof has left and the state of the electrical panel. Where the house roof is a poor fit, a south-facing shop roof often takes the array instead, wired back to the house meter.

Call 250-250-2525 with a rough idea of your monthly bill. For most Belgo homes that is enough to tell whether a visit is worth your time.

UTILITY

Your utility in Belgo: FortisBC

Belgo is in FortisBC’s service area, like the rest of the City of Kelowna. That means no BC Hydro rebate, but you keep FortisBC net metering: surplus is banked as kWh and used later in the year, with any leftover settled once a year. Check the name at the top of your bill to be sure.

INSTALL NOTES

Belgo: what shapes the job

Properties in Belgo usually give us choices a city lot doesn’t: a shop roof, a barn, open ground for a ground mount, or an outbuilding that could run off-grid. We look at the whole property before deciding where the panels go.

  1. N1

Shop and barn metal roofs take clamp-on mounts with no drilling at all.

  2. N2

Older panels: the quote shows clearly whether a service upgrade is needed and what it costs.

  3. N3

Hobby farms: a small ground mount can run a barn, a water pump or a stock-tank heater.

PRICE

Installation prices for Belgo homes

Ground mounts cost more than roof racking but can face due south at the ideal tilt. Long trenches are priced by the metre and shown as their own line.

Installed price ranges, not quotes, as of October 2026. Each size assumes a home using about as much as the system makes (1,200 kWh per kW a year). FortisBC value at about 15.5¢/kWh; BC Hydro shown for comparison (rebate, 40% self-use, 10¢ exports). Paybacks use the mid price and a 3% yearly rate rise.
