Residential Solar Installation in Kelowna
From the first look at your bills to the day FortisBC sets your meter: one plan, one point of contact, and the whole installation written down before you sign.

OVERVIEW
What a home installation in Kelowna actually involves
Residential solar installation in Kelowna follows the same path on almost every house. We look at a year of FortisBC bills, the roof, the shade and the electrical panel. We design a system sized to your use, apply to FortisBC for net metering, pull the electrical permit, install, pass inspection and switch on.
Most homes need between 5 and 12 kW, which is 12 to 28 panels. Install day is the short part: one to three days on the roof. The paperwork around it takes longer, and it is where installations stall if nobody owns it. We own it, and you get the timeline in writing.
Call 250-250-2525 and we can usually tell you in one call whether your roof is worth a visit.

Installed price ranges, not quotes, as of October 2026. Each size assumes a home using about as much as the system makes (1,200 kWh per kW a year). FortisBC value at about 15.5¢/kWh; BC Hydro shown for comparison (rebate, 40% self-use, 10¢ exports). Paybacks use the mid price and a 3% yearly rate rise.

ROOF CHECK
Three things we check before quoting
- Roof age. Less than about ten years left? Re-roof first, or together. Removing and refitting panels later costs $3,000–$5,000.
- Pitch and planes. South, south-west and west work best; east and west lose roughly 10–20% against due south, which we show for your roof.
- Panel box. Older 100 A services may need an upgrade to take a solar breaker. It goes in the quote, not on install day.
- 1Solar modulesAll-black 400–450 W panels, sized and laid out to your use.
- 2Rails & clampsAluminium rails that hold the modules a few centimetres off the roof.
- 3Mounts & flashingLag-bolted into rafters with flashing under the shingle or a tile hook.
- 4Roof deckChecked before anything goes on it. Old shingles get replaced first.
- 5Conduit runWiring from the array to the inverter, strapped and sealed.
- 6InverterTurns the panels’ DC into AC your home uses.
- 7DisconnectA lockable switch so crews can isolate the system.
- 8Panel boxThe solar breaker lands here. Older 100 A panels may need an upgrade.
- 9Bidirectional meterSet by FortisBC to count power both ways for net metering.
- 10GridFortisBC’s lines, which bank your surplus as kWh credit.

Q01How much does solar installation cost in Kelowna?
Most home systems in Kelowna cost between about $14,000 and $37,000 installed, depending on size. A typical 8 kW system is about $20,900 to $26,000, roughly $2.60 to $3.25 per watt. Smaller systems cost more per watt because permits, design and set-up cost about the same at any size.
There is no rebate to subtract on FortisBC, which serves Kelowna. A right-sized 8 kW system saves about $1,490 in its first year and pays for itself around year 14.
Q02Do I need a permit to install solar in Kelowna?
Yes. Every grid-tied system needs an electrical installation permit from Technical Safety BC, pulled by the licensed electrical contractor, and an inspection. A City of Kelowna building permit can also be needed where structural work is involved. FortisBC must approve the system before it is connected.
Q03Will solar panels damage my roof?
Not when they are installed properly. Each mount is bolted into a rafter and sealed with flashing that sits under the shingle above it, the same way roof vents are detailed. On tile roofs we use tile hooks or flashed replacement tiles. We photograph every penetration so you have a record.
Q04Should I replace my roof before installing solar?
If your roof has less than about ten years left, usually yes. A system lasts 25 years or more, and taking it off and putting it back for a re-roof later costs roughly $3,000 to $5,000 on a typical home. We check roof age on the first visit and can coordinate with your roofer.
